According to the force’s public relations department, the security division,
established on December 22, 1988, has accomplished all of the missions assigned
to it over the past decades.
Figures show that the IRGC Aviation Security Force has thwarted 26 cases of
plane hijacking attempts and illegal interference in flights in the air.
Moreover, the IRGC forces have detected and foiled more than 100 hijacking plots
on the ground and have arrested the hijackers before they could carry out their
plots.
The stellar record by the IRGC Aviation Security Force has won praise from the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which gave top marks to the
IRGC’s security procedures in Iranian airports in 2007 and 2012.
The IRGC Aviation Security Force, established on late founder of Islamic
Republic Imam Khomeini’s orders, is tasked with providing security in 64
airports across Iran and is directly responsible for the security of domestic
and international flights.
The special division was formed after a surge of hijacking attempts by the
Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorists in the 1980s.
In December 2013, IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said many
countries are asking Iran to share its experiences in flight security measures.
