Trump, the son and grandson of immigrants, announced last month that he would
issue an executive order to nullify the long-accepted constitutional guarantee
of birthright citizenship. The announcement has drawn rebuke and mockery from
all corners.
Perhaps no political commentary could highlight the irony better than an
editorial cartoon by The Daily News, showing Trump being kicked out of the
country by a Native American with the thought bubble "DID NOT SEE THAT COMING."
Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was an immigrant from Scotland and his
father, Frederick Christ Trump, was born to German immigrants. For decades,
Trump denied his German roots, claiming to be of Scandinavian origin.
The president has falsely told online news publication Axios that the US is "the
only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby
is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years, with all of those
benefits.”
At least 30 other countries allow those born in that country citizenship.
