The 13th OIC (Organization of Islamic Conference) summit was held on April 14 in the Turkish city of Istanbul. The presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in the event was part of an organized effort by Iran to promote dialogue and interaction on regional matters. The Islamic Republic backs resistance, as well as constructive cooperation and coordination with the regional countries and the OIC major players in order to materialize unity, solidarity, justice and peace in the region.

The Iranian president’s speech at the summit mainly addressed issues like dialogue, interaction, peaceful settlement of the disputes and a collective international effort against terrorism. He clearly expressed at his speech: "Neither is Saudi Arabia Iran’s problem nor Iran Saudi Arabia’s. The major problem is ignorance, prejudice and violence provocation. The challenge of all of us is the differences in the Islamic world”. This indicates that Iran does not regard any Islamic country as a threat or enemy. Given the fact that the Islamic Republic has the upper hand over the region, it tries to play a pioneering role in opening the door of dialogue. But for doing this, the Saudi officials are first required to overcome a feeling fear that they have for engaging in a dialogue with Iran. A feeling which stems from their weakness.

Although the Saudi king is somewhat ready to exchange views with the Iranian president, but the differences in Iran and Saudi Arabia’s political understanding of the situation in the region is the sticking point which has led to the failure of security in the region.

If the Arab allies of Saudi Arabia attempts to impose more restrictions on Iran, the conditions for prolongation of the clashes will continue to persist. Iran is making all-out effort to develop proper and effective initiatives for regional peace and security, fighting terrorism and extremism, human rights protection, tackling poverty, women’s rights, and scientific exchange among Islamic nations. This shows that the Islamic Republic has the motivation for developing a cooperative relationship with the OIC member states.

Under the circumstances, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s approach has been focused towards easing tension with Saudi Arabia. The reality is that the Saudi officials are not that much willing to accept Iran’s cooperation-based language and concepts. However, Iran tried to prepare the ground for exchanging views with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry diplomatic officials at the UN general assembly, but they still are insistent on a 0-0 draw in order to cover their weak position in the face of Iran.

Muslim world nations are privy to the fact that Iran has not taken an offensive approach to any country. It has always attempted to combat violence and extremism. Iran’s role in Syria and Iraq should be regarded as an example of Iran’s participation in the battle against terrorism. At present, terrorism has paved the way for creation of division in the Islamic world and devaluation of Islam’s moral virtue as well as thoughts and teachings.

Iran expects that other major players of the Muslim world like Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia be more cooperative and play their part in confronting terrorist groups. Now that terrorism has turned into the main axis of crisis and insecurity in the Middle East, Muslim countries should take an action against it. When terrorism turns into a regional security threat, the OIC member states should prepare the ground and accept the credit, legitimacy and strength of a country like Iran, which is fighting against terrorism.

Iran’s regional role in the fight against terrorism and extremism as well as those groups which deny the issue of balance of power is clear to everyone. Iran’s tone and approach in the 13th OIC summit indicate that the Islamic Republic from one side enjoys its practical might against terrorism and from the other it is trying to lay the ground for a cooperative and multidimensional action in order to restore stability and balance in the region. The OIC member states should pave the way for realization of such cooperative measures. Any conflicting measure by the Muslim nations and their support for groups like Daesh will further deepen the security crisis in the region and will serve the interests of backers of terrorism and the expansionist regime of Israel.
