Spokesman: Safeguard Agreement Only Basis for Iran-IAEA Cooperation in Case of N. Deal Collapse

"At present, we have two types of interactions with the Agency and of course, it has grown to three types of interactions after the nuclear deal; it is natural that if the nuclear deal stops existance, the third type (undertakings based on the deal) will cease and type two that is the Additional Protocol (to the Non-Proliferation Treaty) will also be called off and our interaction with the Agency will remain at the level of the comprehensive safeguard agreement similar to the level of cooperation by all other IAEA members," Kamalvandi told reporters in Tehran on Saturday.

He said a lower level of cooperation with the IAEA even down the level of the safeguard agreement would mean a withdrawal from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but stressed that senior Iranian officials vested with the responsibility have not yet made any decision in this regard.

US President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that the US would no longer remain part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and promised to re-impose the highest level of economic sanctions against Iran in response to Tehran's development of its nuclear program.

After the development, a senior Iranian legislator called on the government to withdraw from the NPT and the 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers following the US abrogation of the nuclear agreement.

"I seriously say that continued commitment to the nuclear deal does not benefit us because the European states are the US slaves and as they haven't done anything without the US permission in the past 4 years, they will continue the same path in the future," Seyed Nasser Moussavi Largani said.

"We should resume 20% enrichment as soon as possible. Even one minute of delay by the government is betrayal of the nation and the Islamic Republic and we should withdraw from the NPT as soon as possible," he added.
