Iran’s New Judiciary Chief Elected Assembly of Experts Vice-Chairman

Following the recent demise of Assembly of Experts’ former vice-chairman Ayatollah Seyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, an election was held at the assembly on Tuesday for the vacant position.
During the poll, members of the assembly elected Hojatoleslam Raeisi as the vice-chairman with 43 votes in favor out of 78 votes.
Former Judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, who also ran for the position, failed to garner the majority of votes.
Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi died at age 70 back in December.
The Assembly of Experts is a high-ranking body that elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution.
Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.
