Slightly over a half of Germans want Chancellor Angela Merkel to stay for the fourth term in office, a new opinion poll released Sunday showed.
A survey by Germany’s leading pollster Emnid, commissioned by the
Bild newspaper, found that 55 percent wished Merkel stayed on the job
past the 2017 general election, while 39 wanted her to go.
This is an improvement on the 42 percent who supported Merkel’s
continued role as the head of state three months ago. Fifty percent of
those sampled in August did not want her to run again.
Chancellor Merkel is widely anticipated to announce on Sunday whether
she will run for reelection. She was first elected as the chancellor in
2005 and reelected twice in 2009 and 2013. She has been at the helm of
her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party for 16 years.
