"Not even two decades after 9/11, US military fighting on the same side as
al-Qaida & ISIS in Yemen & Syria,” Zarif said on his twitter account on Friday.
"Time to stop hype and cover-ups,” the Iranian top diplomat added, referring to
a move by the US to use the recent chemical attack in Syria’s Idlib province as
a pretext to launch missile attacks on Syria.
"US aids Saddam's use of CW against Iran in 80's; then resorts to military force
over bogus CW allegations: 1st in 2003 and now in Syria,” he stated.
"As the only recent victim of mass use of chemical weapons (by Saddam in the
80's), Iran condemns use of all WMD by anyone against anyone,” Zarif twitted.
The US military attacked the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with
59 tomahawk missiles Friday morning, Syria time.
Officially announcing the strike, US President Donald Trump claimed that the
targeted airfield had launched the chemical attack on the rebel-held area in
Idlib.
Earlier on Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the country’s
armed forces "did not and will not" use chemical weapons, even against extremist
groups.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist
groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling
parts of it.
