General Dehqan held separate phone
talks with his Azeri and Armenian counterparts on Sunday, and underlined the
necessity for an immediate halt to their deadly clashes,(FNA) reported.
He also called on both sides to
practice self-restraint and settle the crisis through talks and dialogue.
At least 30 soldiers were killed in
fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces along the frontlines of the
disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, officials of both the countries said on
Saturday.
Both sides blamed the other for the
fighting.
Iranian officials have always
reiterated that the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia
should be resolved only through political solutions.
Earlier today, the Iranian foreign ministry
expressed grave concern about the exacerbation of disputes over
Nagorno-Karabakh region, and invited Baku and Yerevan to self-restraint and
halt in bloody clashes.
"While the region is witnessing
the extremist groups' destructive acts and needs tranquility and stability,
receiving worrying news about exacerbating conflicts in Karabakh region between
Azerbaijan and Armenia has caused grave concerns in the Islamic Republic of
Iran," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said on Sunday.
"We invite both our Northern
neighbors to self-restraint and avoidance of any measure which makes the
situation more difficult and advise them to stop clashes immediately and make
their best efforts to restore tranquility and settle the differences peacefully
within the framework of peace groups and the UN," he added.
