Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moved the
American Embassy there, upending nearly seven decades of American foreign policy
and potentially destroying his efforts to broker peace between Israel and the
Palestinians.
This decision has generated a series of reactions in Palestine and around the
world and even western countries.
Many western thinkers reacted to this decision. One of these persons is
professor Noam Chomsky. Professor Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher,
cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist who has a
lot of works on Israel and Palestine relationship.
Chomsky is a one of the most influential scientists and respected intellectuals
of our time and is one of the most important critics of liberalism and Trump’s
policy.
KHabarfori Website have had an interview with him and asked him to explain his
point of view about this issue.
We asked professor Chomsky that What does he think about recent decision by
Trump about recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and what is his end
for this decision?
He explained in answer that as in the case of Trump’s actions generally, he
knows and cares little about what the impact might be on the people and
societies of the world. Rather, apart from satisfying his megalomania, he
remains focused on his need to maintain support among his popular base, in this
case, primarily Evangelical Christians and rich Jewish donors.
Evangelical Protestantism is a worldwide movement within Protestant Christianity
which maintains the belief that the essence of the Gospel consists of the
doctrine of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ's atonement.
But why this group support Trump? We asked this question of Professor Chomsky.
They are a huge voting bloc in the US. He said. They strongly support Israel, on
their interpretation of the Bible. Some even look forward to Armageddon. And it
reaches to high places, like President George W. Bush. He answered.
Then Professor Chomsky focused on Trump’s policy and continued:
He (Trump) can count on support from the truly important sector of American
society, private wealth and corporate power, because of the enormous gifts he is
lavishing on them while diverting attention with his regular antics.
For the last question, we asked him What should Muslims in America do? Is it
enough to protest against Trump and his policy? Are you optimistic about Muslims
residence in America? Are they able to prevent Trump to transfer America's
embassy to Jerusalem?
The world should react by building an alliance to protect the rights of
Palestinians and curb the destructive actions of the Republican administration
and its dangerous leader, not just on this matter. .
The options available are education, organization, electoral politics,
lobbying,… -- all can be used effectively. I don’t think there is a serious
threat to Muslims in America now. I can recall the days when we were taking a
weekend off in the country and had to look for motels that did not have the sign
"Restricted”. It’s been overcome .He answered
Moving the embassy is still in dispute, and serious activism might make a
difference. Not just Muslims.
