Speaking to Tasnim, Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei pointed to the Iranian border police’s latest report about a recent exchange of fire near the Azeri border and said according to the report, the clash erupted in Azerbaijan’s territories and had nothing to do with Iranian border guards.
"The recent report states that the clash occurred between the border guards of Azerbaijan and smugglers who are nationals of the country,” the commander added.
According to media reports, on June 21, a shootout was recorded at the Iranian-Azerbaijani border section near Baykhanli village of Jalilabad district.
The Azerbaijani State Border Service claimed that the Azeri border guards had detected a group of armed persons from Iran trying to cross the border into Azerbaijan opening fire at the Azeri border guards.
During the incident, the head of the Azerbaijani border patrol received several bullet wounds, while the violators fled the scene, according to the reports.
