TEHRAN (Basirat)- More than 500 liver transplants are carried out annually in the Buali Sina Transplantation Center in the Southern Iranian city of Shiraz, the director of the center said, highlighting that all European and American hospitals together register such a number in a year.
Director of the Buali Sina Transplantation Center Seyed Ali Malek Hosseini said that over 500 liver transplants are carried out annually in the center, underlining the number of transplants carried out in Shiraz is more than all of what is done in a year in hospitals of Europe and the US.
Seyed Ali Malek Hosseini said on Tuesday that the establishment of this educational and research center has led to the promotion of the name of Shiraz in the world's scientific communities.
He continued, "By launching an international recruitment program to attract students from other countries in the future, the research center in Shiraz will become an appropriate model for medical education and transplantation.”
The member of the faculty of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences added that all liver transplants in Shiraz are carried out at one center and a team of doctors under the supervision of specialists.
Expressing that over 99% of the transplants in Fars province are carried out from corpse to living person, Malek Hosseini said that less than one percent of liver transplant surgery is related to the transplant from first-degree relatives of the patient, the success of transplant of the corpse for Shiraz transplant team is a great achievement.
The expert said that the transplant team of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences has completed 4,577 liver transplants, 239 pancreatic transplant surgeries and other successful transplant operations such as kidney, pancreas, liver and the pancreas has made Shiraz a well-known city in the world.
