Iran’s Gas Exports to Neighboring Countries Surge in 12 Months

TEHRAN(Basirat): CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Hassan Montazer Torbati said on Monday that Iran’s gas exports to the neighboring countries experienced a significant rise in the past local calendar year (March 21, 2018-March 20, 2019).

Montazer Torbati expounded on the performance of gas industry and the latest situation of gas exports and said, “Exporting gas to the neighboring countries has enjoyed a considerable hike in the past Iranian calendar year in 1397 (ended March 21, 2019).”

He added that neighboring Turkey is vehemently interested in increasing volume of gas purchase from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Recently, Turkey has called for boosting import of gas volume from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Montazer Torbati reiterated.

Export of Iranian gas to Iraq, Armenia and Republic of Azerbaijan is underway within the framework of the provisions as stipulated in the contract, he said, adding, “Talks are underway between Iranian and Turkish officials for export of gas to Turkey.”

Back in early January, Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization announced in a report that the country has increased its daily export of gas from 25 million cubic meters to 36.24 million cubic meters in the current Iranian year (started on March 21, 2018).

The report added that Turkey was the sole importer of Iranian gas in the last year, but this year Iraq also started importing gas from Iran.

Also, earlier on December 18, Armenian Ambassador to Tehran Artashes Tumanyan said that his country is interested to import more gas from Iran.

Iran owns the world’s largest natural gas reserves after Russia, and is also Turkey’s second biggest gas supplier after Russia.

Iran’s natural gas is of crucial importance to Turkey as the energy-hungry country uses a significant portion of imported Iranian gas to generate electricity.
