Iran Commemorates 2009 Pledge of Allegiance Rally

Iranians held nationwide marches on Thursday in commemoration of a huge rally back in 2009 in which people reaffirmed allegiance to the Islamic Republic Establishment following months of turmoil, including sacrilegious riots, in the wake of that year’s presidential election.

Iranian people poured to the streets in various cities on Thursday to mark what has become known as "Dey 9” epic, designated in the Iranian calendar as the "day of insight and nation’s allegiance to religious leadership.”

Massive rallies on December 30, 2009, put an end to a period of occasional street riots and unrest that erupted after the presidential election, and gained notoriety later as ‘the sedition of 88’.

The rioters had not even respected the highly-revered religious sanctities of the Iranian nation, holding jubilant demonstrations on Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In a Thursday speech at an event in the city of Yazd to celebrate Dey 9, Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei hailed the 2009 "glorious and matchless demonstration” as "a shot at the heart of the United States, Israel and enemies of the Islamic Establishment.”
