Speaking at a cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday, Rouhani said the American officials have started a new round of propaganda campaign on Monday to pressure the Iranian nation.
The president further pointed to a failed US military operation in Iran's Tabas Desert in 1980 and said, “The Americans did not learn a lesson from the Tabas incident, and then went on to plot a coup and incite (former Iraqi dictator) Saddam to wage a war against the Islamic Iran.”
“Every day over the past 40 years, they (US officials) have resorted to a new plot against the Iranian people but they have always failed and will be defeated in their schemes once again,” he stressed.
“In all of these plots, the Iranian people have stood up, resisted and made sacrifices, and we have always witnessed divine mercy and victory,” he said, adding, “We will also witness the same divine victory today.”
The president went on to say that the Americans wrongly think that they are capable of controlling the oil market.
The remarks came after the White House said on Monday that US President Donald Trump “has decided not to reissue” waivers regarding sanctions against countries importing Iranian oil when the waivers expire “in early May”.The exact deadline is May 2.
“This decision is intended to bring Iran's oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” the statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders read.
Countries that continue to import Iranian oil in large amounts include India, China, South Korea, Japan and Turkey.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to "ensure an appropriate supply (of oil) for the markets" in order to make up for the loss of Iranian oil in the global market.
