"We rank 39th in the world in organ donation," Director-General of the Association of the Iranians' Organ Donation Katayoun Najafizadeh said in Tehran on Saturday.

She underlined the necessity for promoting the culture of organ donation among people, and said positive campaign and moves made by specialized physicians, artists and athletes have played a significant role in this regard.

Before April 2000, a law was passed by parliament justifying the procurement of organs from those deemed clinically brain-dead.

However, the organ donation of brain-dead patients is novel in Iran, thus the rate of organ donation of brain-dead patients can be very encouraging.

More than one million people in the world currently benefit from organ transplant therapy, and many of these patients have survived for more than 25 years.
